Water Fountain Cleaning Tips

Looking after your water fountain is essential if you are to prolong the life and enjoy the benefits for a long time.  In the main water fountains are exceptionally easy to keep clean and maintain, and it will only take a little amount of effort every now and then to keep the fountain clean.  There are some tips and advice which you can follow that will help you in making the job even easier and we will run through these in this article.

Tip 1 – Consult the Manual

It comes highly recommended when you first purchase your water fountain to read the manual which comes with the fountain very carefully.  Inside the manual will most likely be some advice on the best way to maintain your water fountain, any specialist products which may be used to help with the cleaning process and some general guidelines.  In the main all of the water fountains will require a similar cleaning procedure but you should take note in case the one purchased does require some specialist cleaning.

Tip 2 – Removing Dirt and Dust

When it comes to cleaning the everyday build up of dirt and dust from the water fountain it is best to use a non abrasive cloth.  All that is required is a surface wipe over with the cloth to remove any build up and residue, a regular clean will also keep the water fountain looking in good condition and prevent it from looking dull and discoloured.

Tip 3 – Check the Water Type and Change on a Regular Basis

Wherever you look for advice you will always be told to ensure you change the water within the fountain on a regular basis.  There are a number of reasons why this should be done and this will include removing any algae or mineral deposit build ups plus any debris, and especially with outdoor fountains leaves or garden waste.  Once the water has been drained from the fountain then a clean with a non abrasive brush can be done to remove the algae which may have built up on the side of the water fountain basin.  Again it is recommended to consult with the manufactures manual which comes with your fountain as to how often you should change the water.

Tip 4 – Clean the Pump

The pump is the most important mechanical part of the water fountain and needs to have a clean on a fairly regular basis to remove any debris or mineral build up.  It is imperative if you are cleaning the pump to not remove any working parts and ensure the power to the pump has been stopped.   If you are opening the pump in any way then do consult the manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure you do not cause any damage.  Depending on the area you live in could reflect on how often you would need to clean the pump, in hard water areas you will need to clean the pump more often than soft water.

Tip 5 – Winter Cleaning

If you have an outdoor water fountain then the winter causes a lot more debris to gather within the water fountains basin.  During the autumn and winter seasons you may find leaves drop in from the bushes and trees, do make a regular check and remove any build up from the water fountain to keep everything in good working order.
